Intro

We helped SOS Children’s Villages Croatia design and launch a new donation app from scratch—creating a user-friendly way to give, building a fresh sub-brand, and delivering a 5-star experience on the App Store.

The challenge

  • SOS Children’s Villages struggles to raise donations from Gen Z
  • Donations via the App Store (specifically from Apple) are hard to make user friendly (sending them out of app, long payment forms, etc.)
  • Creating a multilingual app, and showing the impact of a donation is incredibly hard

What we did

After over 100+ user interviews with other NGOs and donors, we figured out that the main problem with donations are:

  • “I can’t see the impact of my donation”
  • “I don’t trust organisations with my money”
  • And for NGOs: “Retaining GenZ over longer periods of time is hard”

After creating all user flows, and figuring out the technical limitations, we faced a big challenge: How to donate within the App Store.

Long story short: After a big think tank, we figured out a way how to donate with Apple Pay, without ever leaving the app, and making donations as easy as possible.

After rolling out the app to the App Store, and getting the first 5-star reviews and donations, a new problem appeared:

To actually show the impact of a donation, the marketing team needs a simple way to upload new content.

So we designed and developed a full content desktop app for internal use.

Results:

  • 5-star rating on the App Store
  • One of the first ever “Donate with Apple Pay” experiences
  • Rolled out the app nation-wide
  • Content dashboard saved 2h of work per week, per user

In 2023, the app got discontinued due to a lack of support internally.
